So last night, @PenguinPrison played live at Pasagüero and tho there weren’t as many people as I expected, that meant I was practically in front of the stage!

Chris joined the audience while he sang and played; the whole performance was one big dancing riot and it turned out to be everything I could have hoped for. After the show I told him I was the one that had stalked him over Twitter for the past few weeks and he chuckled as he signed his CD for me.

The whole band even joined all of us to dance afterwards! Thank you Octavio and Ce for coming with me.

Penguin Prison—one of my favorite DJ’s on Earth—mentioned me on Twitter.
I feel like fainting.
Can @astrotastic provide with a fitting, happy-kind-of-dismay GIF?
Been looking forward to seeing him live. ONE WEEK TO GO.

This has just arrived, all the way from London. (Yay!)

It’s also the first CD I buy in years and this copy is, quite possibly, a collector’s item in Mexico.

What a weekend.
Got 5 pairs of cute socks, attended theatre class, interviewed Imogen Heap, saw her live concert and ended up spending some time with her after the show, which was rad. She’s lovely and I sort of have a crush on her, but pray don’t tell her. :)
It also rained and was all very fine.

Razones por las cuales Shakira no debería cantar el tema de SA2010

When it comes to Shakira, I understand the appeal.  She makes solid pop hits, she has a wonderful accent and she moves her hips, uh, well.  I live in Latin America and hear more Shakira than I’d like to admit and I’m STILL not sick of “She Wolf.”  If anyone gets it, I get it.

That said, I’m writing to you today because a soccer-related travesty has taken place and I’m hoping we can fix it.  Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)” has been named the official song of the 2010 World Cup.  Here are my problems with this choice, listed by importance:

  1. Like Daryl of World Cup Blog, I’m not thrilled with the song’s opening lyrics, “You’re a good soldier.”  The most covered African personal narrative (that is to say, a truly personal narrative, not a larger story) in the U.S. over the last decade has been of all the children ripped from their homes and forced to hunt and kill other people.  Call me over-sensitive, if it suits you, but I feel pretty strongly that this is a bad idea.
  2. We couldn’t find an African artist to perform the official anthem of the FIRST EVER WORLD CUP IN AFRICA?  The beat of the song is played by Capetown-based Freshlyground, an eclectic band with African rhythms at the heart of their music and several wonderful vocalists, lead by Zolani Mahola.  Why not just have them play the official song?  It’d bring the band and South African music as a whole plenty of attention, and the World Cup would be doing its host a solid by keeping things local.  And if you’re concerned that a largely unknown band wouldn’t make enough money for the World Cup, then go with Somali-born K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag,” a song about soccer that was already selected by FIFA partner Coca-Cola as its official 2010 World Cup song.
  3. Fozzie Bear has a potential grounds for a copyright suit.  Foz, let me know if you need any help on it, buddy.

Don’t get me wrong… deep-down, I actually like that Shakira track a little bit and I’ll likely revel in hearing the Spanish version over and over again in my local ice cream parlor in the coming months.  But a Latin American singing the anthem for the first African World Cup?  That ain’t right.

I really do love music history. As much as I hated having to go to that class and get reamed by the tests I took in that class, it was extremely interesting to me. That being said, I truly wish that the class was more based on this flow chart.
